Beyond straightness, the quality of a cue hinges largely on the choice of tip: both American and Japanese professionals favor French, high‑grade cowhide tips. The leather should be regularly maintained with sandpaper or a lead knife to preserve its crown; a slightly rougher surface helps grip chalk, and the sides of the tip must be flush with the wood.

Cues with wider spacing between ferrules tend to come from the outer layers of the tree, while those with tighter spacing are sourced from the heartwood. You’ve probably seen annual growth rings: each ring is slightly larger than the last, and the spaces between them are also wider. By judging the distance between the ferrules, you can tell which part of the wood was selected for the cue. A good cue features several evenly spaced ferrules, straight grain, and long, sharply pointed ferrules—qualities that offer a pleasing visual appeal. When transporting the cue, if it’s not perfectly straight, you’ll notice right away and can correct it promptly.
