The 2023 Guangzhou City 19th Sports Festival Chinese Billiards Tournament, hosted by the Guangzhou Municipal Sports Bureau and the Guangzhou Municipal Sports Federation and organized by the Guangzhou Billiards Association, was held at the Guangzhou Yongli Billiards Club from August 26 to 28.

After three days of competition and a total of 119 thrilling matches, players Wei Liang, Mei Yifei, Li Hui, and Chang Mingyang advanced to the semifinals. On the final day, Mei Yifei and Chang Mingyang defeated Li Hui and Wei Liang, respectively, with scores of 9–7 and 9–8, setting up a championship showdown. In the decisive match, the two contenders battled all the way to a tiebreaker; Mei Yifei adjusted his form at the crucial moment and staged a comeback to clinch the title 11–10, while Chang Mingyang settled for runner-up honors.

According to reports, Chinese‑style billiards combines the tactical depth and defensive rigor of English‑style snooker with the offensive flair and entertainment value of American nine‑ball. It is easy to pick up, offers versatile and flexible playing styles, and demands both strategic thinking and physical stamina—making it an excellent choice for promoting nationwide fitness. In recent years, thanks to the vigorous efforts of the Guangzhou Billiards Association, Chinese‑style billiards in Guangzhou has grown rapidly, with a steadily increasing number of participants and a sharp rise in the number of service‑oriented billiard clubs across the city, providing robust institutional support for the sport’s development. This event is a flagship traditional tournament meticulously cultivated by the Guangzhou Billiards Association; to date, it has been successfully held eight times, playing a pivotal role in advancing Chinese‑style billiards in Guangzhou.

The tournament has received strong support and assistance from the Guangzhou Sports Lottery Management Center, the Guangzhou Sports Foundation, as well as numerous social organizations and enterprises, enriching its content and significance.
