KELLY FISHER TAKES SECOND IN LATEST KWIKFIRE TOUR STOP

Congratulations to Allison Fisher for providing the Family Billiards' fans with an exciting final's by playing a near perfect match against Kelly Fisher this past weekend. We'd like to thank Chris and Sandra Aldridge, owners of Family Billiards, and all of their staff for providing the players first-class treatment during the event and working extra hard to secure deluxe accommodations in Boone, in spite of the busy foliage weekend. Many players remarked how generous the Aldridges' are and how they would love to make this event an annual gathering.

The $2,000 added event included 3 top WPBA professionals: Kelly Fisher, Allison Fisher, and Kim Shaw. The random draw made for an interesting start since all 3 top professionals found their way in the top-half of the brackets. Janet Atwell and Holly Sholes, WPBA professionals, seemed to get the brunt of the luck by drawing Kelly Fisher and Kim Shaw in their first rounds. Both players lost tough matches and faced each other on the one-loss side. Holly was able to make it hill-hill after being down 5-6, and escaped with the win after making an early combo in the final game.

In the lower-half, Kristi Carter, KWIKFIRE Tour tournament director and former WPBA professional, signed on to play this weekend to help complete the 16-player bracket. She had a close first-round match against Katie Cowan, but Katie was able to pull away winning 7-5. Buffy Jolie and Marianne Merrill played solidly and would face each other in round two.

The highlight match early on was definitely Kim Shaw versus Kelly Fisher. It was anybody's set with both players staying within one-to-two games of each other; in the end, Kim Shaw was able to hold it together and win 9-7. Allison squared off against Lisa Davids, and sought friendly revenge from the previous weekend's defeat. This time it was Lisa that never found her groove, and Allison won decisively, 9-1, which meant she would have to face Kim Shaw for a place in Sunday's hot-seat match. Leslie Furr seemed to be making waves on the bottom-half after winning her first round match, and then she went on to defeat Katie Cowan 7-5. Leslie and Buffy were now in a position to secure their place on the winner's side for Sunday.

On the one-loss side, Kelly Fisher made "kwik" work of her opponents with an 18-2 record in her next two matches, while Katie Cowan fought hard to get through to Sunday with wins over Lisa Cossette and Holly Sholes. The fans were treated to another exciting match-up when Kim faced-off against Allison. It was a tight race with little room for error and Allison was able to take it 9-7. Meanwhile, Leslie and Buffy duked it out, both already surpassing their highest finish to date on the KWIKFIRE Tour, and Buffy was able to get an early lead and won 7-4.

Six players remained coming into Sunday with two on the winner's side and four on the one-loss. Kim Shaw would be paired against Katie Cowan; Kelly Fisher would face Leslie Furr; and Buffy Jolie would be challenged by the legendary Allison Fisher. Two of the three matches were one-sided, as Allison and Kelly dominated their way through the sets, while Katie fell a little short in a great hill-hill thriller against Kim Shaw. Katie and Leslie's 5-6th finish would tie them for Top APA Finisher. Congratulations to both for an outstanding performance.

The 4th place match between Kelly and Kim was everything the locals could ask for. Kim is the co-founder of the KWIKFIRE Tour, but this was her last event because she will be moving back to England this month. Kelly jumped ahead with a sizeable lead and with a few misfortunes, Kim was back in the match, and the fans seem to be pulling for Kim! Kelly handled the pressure with grace and steadily put the lid on Kim's KFT career by winning 9-7. Kim, the KFT team and all your friends are going to miss you.

With Allison waiting in the hot-seat, Buffy and Kelly squared off. It was a tense match for both players, albeit different reasons. Kelly seemed to struggle off the break and couldn't get into a rhythm, while Buffy played steadily but was nervous. Buffy was down 4-1 and fought her way to 5-5, then Kelly responded to take a 7-5 lead. The critical point in the match came when Buffy had an open chance to get to the hill first (pros go to 9, others go to 7), but missed a 9-ball, which allowed Kelly to go up 8-5. A safety battle ensued in game 14, then a window opened for Kelly to take the match with a 2-9 combo, but she scratched in the side, and Buffy ran out to go hill-hill! Kelly broke in the final game, and ironically, after breaking dry four racks in a row, this time she made two balls, had an open shot at the one, and ran out for the win, and chance at her third KFT title in a row. After the match, Buffy stated, "I'm happy with the way I played. I stayed down and gave myself a chance to win. The equipment is so nice, you don't have to worry about the ball rolling off and I was able to just stay focused."

This is the fourth time Allison and Kelly have met in the finals of a KWIKFIRE Tour event, and the results of those previous matches had Kelly winning 2-1, but Allison had a slight edge in games at 27-24. A close match was to be expected. Kelly won the lag, broke, and Allison had an early opportunity to take the first game but faltered and Kelly went up 1-0. But that would be the last good opportunity Kelly had. From that point on, Allison broke and ran the next four break opportunities, and never gave away control of the table on Kelly's breaks by either running out or playing safe. Allison took an incredible 6-1 lead, and was in perfect form. In fact, the only ball missed was a 9-ball to go 7-1, which Kelly made to go 6-2. Allison remained relentless, recovered quickly and won the match 9-2. Family Billiards and the Aldridge family are special to her so it was obvious this win meant a lot. It was a remarkable performance and a pleasure to watch for fans and players alike.

Holly Sholes defeated Gina Mashburn in Sunday's Second Chance event, and Allison pulled the lucky ticket for the Break 'n Run but fell short after missing a shot in the side.
